Previous Expeditions
There have been some previous expeditions to Ethiopia.
The Blue Nile -soon to be dammed, was first descended by John Blashford-Snell in 1968 on rafts, from Lake Tana to the Sudanese border. Mick Hopkinson and Mike Jones were the next in 1972 being the first kayakers down it. There have been a few other expeditions in the country, Ross Purdy has kindly told us about their exped in the 90's, he was part of a British and Italian group who had a succesful decent of the Blue Nile but were blighted by malaria. Alan Fox also explored Ethiopia in the 90's leading a 3 man exped to trek, paraglide and kayak the previously unexplored tribs of the Omo. There have been more recent Czech expeditions one in 07 that involved a 4 day walk out after the river turned into an un-runnable gorge... I hope these Russian maps we have are up to the job! |
